Group EMDR for Trauma Processing (GTEP)
The trauma processing group is based on the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (GTEP), a structured EMDR approach that allows participants to process distressing memories and emotions without having to share their personal experiences. This is not a traditional talking therapy group—there is no requirement to discuss your trauma with others.
How GTEP Works:
-
Each participant works individually within the group setting using guided exercises and structured worksheets.
-
The protocol follows an adapted EMDR process, utilising bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) to help the brain process and reframe distressing memories.
-
GTEP gently targets both “Big T” and “small t” trauma, reducing emotional distress and promoting resilience in a safe and supportive environment.*
-
The process allows for private reflection and healing while benefiting from the shared energy of a group experience.
This approach is ideal for those who want to process difficult emotions, unwanted memories, and past relationship experiences without reliving them through discussion.
* Trauma can show up in different ways, and both big T and small t experiences can have a lasting impact on well-being.
-
Big T trauma refers to overwhelming or intensely distressing events that can leave a deep emotional imprint, such as feeling unsafe, trapped, or in serious danger within a relationship.
-
small t trauma includes ongoing patterns of emotional hurt, such as being manipulated, controlled, criticized, or made to feel unworthy over time.
Both types of trauma are valid, and GTEP allows for gentle processing of these experiences without requiring discussion or reliving painful memories. This group provides a structured and supportive way to reduce distress and build resilience in a safe, private space.
